EMF provides critical support for the establishment of two unique training opportunities in global health Two innovative new programs are getting underway with core funding from EMF, both of which will provide expanded opportunities for U.S. students to pursue career interests in international research. The Center for Global Health at the University of Virginia will initiate a multidisciplinary program of international exchange in the fields of medicine, nursing, the humanities, law, engineering, and education, to address health threats facing developing countries. The EMF grant will promote research by students, faculty and visiting scholars (see
http://www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/internet/news/Archives04/ellison.cfm ). A second program, aimed at graduate-level students in medicine, public health, and other health professions, provides an opportunity for one year of clinical research training in a developing country, working at NIH-supported international centers with research teams of U.S. and local scientists. EMF has joined with the Fogarty International Center at NIH to establish the FIC/Ellison Overseas Fellowships in Global Health and Clinical Research
(
