EMF contributes to expanded global surveillance efforts for emerging infectious diseases EMF awards are contributing to research and training on infectious disease surveillance in Asia and Africa. Programs such as these better equip local scientists to recognize and contain new disease outbreaks before they can spread internationally. A recent infrastructure award to Dr. Robert Webster at St. Jude Children's Hospital provides support for expansion of laboratory facilities and training activities for influenza surveillance in China and Korea. These studies emphasize expanded monitoring of circulating strains of avian influenza, as a method to predict the emergence of new or more dangerous forms of the human disease. A training award to the CDC Foundation has allowed the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to establish a new
Joint Global Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program in Kenya , which is a pilot program to support in-country training for local scientists in both the laboratory and field-based aspects of infectious disease surveillance. |
